Set Yourself Up for Success in this Popular Family Sport

We receive a lot of inquiries on the best way to get started in cowboy mounted shooting. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Do seek advice from experienced shooters.
  2. Do attend a new shooters clinic, (or two or three) if at all possible. These clinics will set you and your horse up for success. Guns and holsters are typically provided.
  3. Do start quietly. Over the last half dozen years or so, we have started several young horses to gunfire by using kid’s cap guns. It’s an inexpensive introduction without the risk of over exposure.
  4. Don’t just go out and start shooting full loads around your horse. It is VERY easy to over expose a horse to gun fire. Once you do that, it can be very hard to bring them back.

WWMSAs with most things, if you are going to do it, take your time, get good instruction, and do it well.
