After 23 years on the force, retired Seattle police officer Dan Howe was looking for a new challenge. He’d been trail riding and packing for 30 years but after coming out to a WWMS practice, he was attracted to, as he says, “Having to do multiple things at one time,” shooting, riding, and handling a course running fast. So Dan, with his homebred AQHA mare Lightning, started cowboy mounted shooting two years ago at age 70. “Competing,” he says, “is something that makes you feel young.” If you’re interested in a new challenge, come check out WWMS practices in Sultan on the weekends, weather permitting.
