If you have ever been invited to a branding, you know there’s a specific protocol, a “right way” to handle cattle both on ground and in the saddle. You’ll also find that during the action, (whether it’s sorting, branding, or moving pairs) is not the most opportune time to ask questions or school a horse.

The Cattlemen’s Connection was designed to provide both you and your horse a pathway to become comfortable in stockhandling, while celebrating the horse and cattle culture of the Pacific Slope by showcasing the growing sport of Traditional Cowboy Ranch Roping.

Kyler Beard from the legendary Beard Rodeo family and founder of the Cowboy Traditions Ranch Roping Assoc. will be bringing his low-stress cattle handling techniques and passion for protecting the “best practices” for the land and livestock to the arena for two days of herd handling, colt starting, and horsemanship. Kyler will demonstrate branding and vaccinating methods that in his words create  “an easier way to work with cattle and horses.” Kyler has always advocated using the latest animal health equipment and time-honored ranching techniques. Having grown up working with his grandfather’s rough stock, he’s seen it all when it comes to handling livestock situations and has the ability to teach others methods that work very effectively. He currently runs 70 summer calving cows and custom

grazes 500 yearlings while riding colts and selling finished horses. Kyler credits his work with Buck Brannaman and Ricky Quinn for fueling his dream of sharing traditions of the California and Great Basin through his creation of  Cowboy Traditions Ranch Roping Assoc in 2009. http://www.cowboytraditionsranchroping.com. The association has been growing in popularity throughout the Northwest and is best known for it’s Spirit of the West Ranch Roping each Spring in Ellensburg. Kyler also competed in Buck Brannaman’s  prestigious Pro-Am Invitational Vaquero Roping in Santa Ynez California. So if you are interested in learning about the growing sport (and art) of ranch roping, this is your chance. Tuesday afternoon Kyler is hosting an invitational roping event where you will see different moving shots along with three man yearling doctoring and vaccinating. The band BearGrass from Idaho will be playing George Strait and other country favorites in the adjacent beer garden during the roping and happy hour, providing time for conversations and questions with the pro’s.

If you are interested in becoming certified with the Beef Quality Assurance program, on Wednesday morning, Don Llewellyn Ph.D., a Regional Livestock Specialist with WSU will be hosting a 2-hour certification workshop in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Connection.

The Cattlemen’s Connection is designed to be hands-on and guaranteed to be fun! NFR Barrel man and rodeo clown JJ Harrison will be “on- hand” both days to keeping things moving on the floor, in the arena and the beer garden with product give-aways and his unique talent for engaging the crowd.
