AUBURN, Wash. (Sept. 9, 2011) – Win Photos Will Do staged a furious stretch rally and scored a half-length victory over Ontheshadyside in Friday’s $10,900 feature race for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.
Touch the Sun had a five-length lead in mid-stretch, but weakened late to finish third while Candy for Debbie, the 8-to-5 betting favorite, finished fourth.
Patiently ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, Win Photos Will Do trailed by as many as 21 lengths on the backstretch and was still in sixth place, some 13 lengths back of Touch the Sun, at the quarter-pole before mounting his rally.
Win Photos Will Do ran one mile ion 1:37.44 on a fast track and paid $9.60, $4.40 and $3.40. Ontheshadyside, ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, also closed well to finish second and paid $5.20 and $3.60.
Touch the Sun set fractions of :22.73, :45.74, 1:10.51 and 1:23.77 before tiring in the final furlong. Ridden by Pedro Terrero, Touch the Sun paid $3.
Saddling her sixth feature race winner of the meet to go with one stakes victory, Chris Stenslie trains Win Photos Will Do for owners One Horse Will Do Corp. (Jody Peetz) and Erin Palmer. Palmer and her father, Reed, are the official track photographers at Emerald Downs.
A British Columbia-bred by Vying Victor-Stop That Broad, Win Photos Will Do has a lifetime record of 4-2-1 in 10 starts with earnings of $30,532. The gelding has not been favored in any of the wins, and a different jockey has been aboard for each victory.
NOTES: Chris Randall and Nick Rossi’s Touch of Elegance ($2.80) became the meet’s first seven-time winner with an easy gate-to-wire victory under Leslie Mawing in Friday’s third race. Trained by Frank Lucarelli, the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred ran 6-½ furlongs in 1:15.82 and is now 7-0-1 in eight starts this season. Remarkably, she isn’t a shoo-in for honors as Top Claimer as Buddy Dave has six wins and figures to have at least one more start, and both Rossi Reserve and Untilifindyou are lurking in the weeds with five wins apiece…Touch of Elegance was finally claimed Friday as trainer Roy Lumm paid $12,500 for the filly on behalf of owners Janet Johnson and Blue Diamond Stable…Perfect Finish was scratched earlier in the day, reducing the race three field to four runners and Touch of Elegance accounted for $57,175 of a $64,255 in the show pool…The victory aboard Touch of Elegance extended Mawing’s string to 18 straight days with at least one win…In the fifth race, Mawing made it eight straight days with at least two wins with a come-from-behind score aboard Shameonya ($17) for trainer Bonnie Jenne and owner Vaden Ashby…In the last eight racing days Mawing has 2, 4, 5, 2, 3, 4, 2 and 2 wins…The most expensive claim of the night was the 3-year-old colt Seattle Sniper, third-place finisher in the sixth race, going to trainer Blaine Wright and owner Wesley Melcher for $20,000…Jockey Gallyn Mitchell and trainer Doris Harwood combined to win the second race with Mariah’s Juke Box ($6.60) and the sixth with Avalon Beach ($12.60). Jeff Harwood co-owns both horses…Mitchell and Harwood also finished second with Ontheshadyside in the feature…Live racing continues Saturday with an eight-race program at 2 p.m.
