Our Loss - NRHA Legend Dale Wilkinson Passes Away

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - March 12, 2010 - Dale Wilkinson, whose name is synonymous with the sport of Reining and known to many as the “Father of Modern Day Reining,” passed away last night in Georgia. He was recovering from recent hip surgery and was on dialysis in Augusta. He was 84.

Wilkinson was honored in 1986 as the first inductee to the NRHA Hall of Fame for his many accomplishments such as the winner of the first NRHA Futurity in 1966 aboard Pocorochie Bo. He was also an AQHA and NCHA Hall of Fame inductee and the only rider to win both the NRHA Futurity and NCHA Futurity. With all his accomplishments, he is probably best known as a mentor to many of today’s top trainers. He took the education of horsemen and women to a new level when he became the founder and developer of the University of Findlay’s horse program. In 2005, the University recognized Wilkinson by naming an indoor arena in his honor. The arena was one of the original buildings Dale built when he started working with the University in 1976.

GUNNER IS AN NRHA TWO MILLION DOLLAR SIRE

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – March 11, 2010 – National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame stallion, “Gunner” (Colonels Smoking Gun), is unofficially the eighth NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire. His offspring have quickly racked up earnings moving him from the list of 18 Million Dollar Sires up to the Two Million Dollar achievement in just three years. Money earners at the 2010 NRHA European Futurity (Pretty Miss Smokegun and Gunspinner) and at the Cactus Reining Classic (Gunners Special Nite) helped bring his unofficial total progeny earnings to $2,000,453.

Gunner, bred by Eric Storey, is the top earning offspring of the Colonel Freckles’ son Colonelfourfreckle. The 1993 stallion is out of Katie Gun who has produced NRHA earners of more than $405,000. Gunner was the 1996 NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion ridden by Clint Haverty. At the time, Paul and Pam Rohus/Double PR Ranch owned Gunner. Five years later, he won the USEF National Reining Championship with Bryant Pace aboard for owner Debra Sloan. The stallion earned nearly $175,000 in his career and was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2003. McQuay Stables Inc.'s (Tim and Colleen McQuay) currently own and stand the stallion in Tioga, Texas.

Gunner’s top performers include: Gunners Special Nite ($163,100: two-time NRHA Derby Level 4 Open finalist, NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Champion, NRHA Futurity Level 3 Open Champion, NRBC Level 4 Open finalist and AQHA World Show Junior Reining finalist); Gunnatrashya ($157,390: NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion and All American Quarter Horse Congress Open Champion), The Great Guntini ($130,590: finalist in NRHA Futurity Open Level 4, NRBC Open Level 4 and NRHA Derby Open Level 4); Snow Gun ($122,090: NRHA Futurity Open Level 4 third place, WEG Team Silver Medalist, and NRBC Level 4 Open finalist); Sorcerers Apprentice ($90,540: AQHA World Champion Senior Reining; and finalist in NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open, Reining By The Bay Level 4 Open and NRBC Level 4 Open).

NRHA will recognize Gunner for this spectacular achievement during the 2010 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show in November. He also will be recognized during the National Reining Breeders Classic in Katy, Texas.

Incorporated in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association is the governing body of the sport of Reining. NRHA, with their International Headquarters in Oklahoma City, is responsible for promoting the sport of Reining and working to ensure the highest standards of competition. Mike Berg And Outta Dough Slide By Three NRHA Million Dollar Riders To Win the 2010 Cactus Reining Classic Open Derby

Mike Berg and Outta Dough (Gallo Del Cielo X Dough Olena) owned by Dorothy Queen of Whitesboro, Texas, slid right by NRHA Million Dollar Riders Todd Bergen, Andrea Fappani and Randy Paul to win the 2010 Cactus Reining Classic $30,000 Open Derby. The run also earned the duo the $10,000 Intermediate Open Derby title as well, resulting in $15,669 in combined prize money for their near perfect performance.

A total of 58 horse and rider combinations competed in the Open Derby Divisions. The lead changed hands several times from Bergen to Fappani and then to Paul, who all went early on in the draw. It looked like Randy Paul and Tinker With Diamonds (Like A Diamond X Tinker Nic) owned by Rancho Oso Rio, LLC of Scottsdale, Arizona had a lock on the title with a score of 226.5, until Berg of Temecula, California, going 48th in the draw, posted a score of 227

Berg was thrilled with Outta Dough's performance "I don't have to worry about him stopping, I don't have to worry about him spinning, I just had to make him run, that's it." When asked what challenges he anticipated from pattern 9 Berg replied "The challenges in pattern 9 for me are the four stops. All my horse thinks about is stopping, so after one or two stops, it's really hard to get him running free and running correct without thinking about stopping too much. I almost have to whisper the word whoa. Every time I run, my instinct is to push harder, but with him I have to push softer so he'll run freer. It's not a bad thing ... he just wants to stop ... he craves it."

Outta Dough is not only known for his stop but for being a very happy horse in the pen. "He has a lot of expression and presence in the pen....people always comment on that. It's the way I train a horse. I want them to look like they enjoy their job, and that horse enjoys his job. He's naturally a beautiful horse, so I don't have to try to make him look stylish. I let him do the talking. Hopefully the judges like it and the pattern comes together for me like it did tonight" says Berg.
Berg explains what makes Outta Dough so special "He's special to me because of the customer who owns him, Dorothy Queen. She was my first customer and she has a lot of faith in Kristi and I, she has stuck with us for a long time, and she gave me the opportunity with this horse. She loves him as much as I do, and she's probably going to have to pry him from my cold dead hands when she wants to take him home someday. I treat him like he's mine almost. He's the first really good horse I've had for a long time, and it's pretty exciting to have success with him. He's pretty special to me that way."

When asked about the caliber of the competition he was up against Berg replies "The riders we showed against today were tough. Andrea (Fappani) has to be pushing $2 million, Todd Bergen between the Cow Horses and the Reining has won over $3 million, Randy Paul is a million dollar rider...I've aspired to be as successful as those guys for a long time, so to step up and show people that I can compete with them and have the horse power is pretty special. I like to hand it to those guys every now and then. It makes you feel pretty good."

Overall, the Open Derby alone had 13 horse and rider combinations who posted scores of 220 and above, proving that the Cactus Reining Classic had some of the best horses in North America in attendance.

Horse Show Manager Mandi Brumley of Brumley Management Group LLC could not be more pleased with the event "The quality of the horses and riders competing at this year's Cactus Reining Classic was amazing....there were million dollar riders and million dollar horses from all over the United States and Canada, and they had to run hard to beat the competition."

Brumley spoke about the overwhelming support from the Cactus Reining Classic corporate sponsors "The event has never seen this level of participation from the corporate community before, and we are really grateful to have their participation. We are so fortunate to have sponsors like Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley, Nutrena, SmartPak, Leather CPR, eZall, National Horse Blankets, Ariat and Paddock Cakes all supporting our show. To have our media partner Equestrian Life stream both the Non Pro Derby and the Open Derby online is such a tremendous asset to this event. There are so many people who would like to have been here, but couldn't but they could still participate by watching it live on the Internet."

The 2010 Cactus Reining Classic Non Pro Derby and Open Derby replays are available for viewing online at http://equestrianlife.com/cactus . Equestrian Life will also be streaming both Reining By The Bay July 20-25th from Woodside, California and High Roller Reining Classic September 12-18th from Las Vegas, Nevada as well.

Wild Hickory Bob, a 5-year-old gelding and 2007 Non-Pro Futurity Champion won the first round of the Open at San Antonio and also made the Non-Pro finals with owner, Justin White. Justin and his father, Jon, will both show the gelding in Houston.

Dual Rey Me, the three-time World Champion Open Horse comes to San Antonio just a few thousand dollars shy of Sister CD in all-time earnings. Candace Barwick, Stephenville, Texas, will show him in the Non-Pro.

Copaspepto, the 2007 NCHA Horse of the Year, will be shown in the Non-Pro by new owner Don Boone, Weatherford, Texas.

Thomas E Hughes, the NCHA World Champion Stallion of 2009, has earned more than $333,000 and is being shown by Don Boone’s wife, Kathy. Both Boones are perennial contenders in the year-end Non-Pro title races.

Non-Pro competitor Paula Wood, Stephenville, Texas, has won more than $1.5 million. She and her mare Donas Cool Cat won the first stop of the Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting in San Antonio in February with a career best score of 226-points.

CowTrac Systems Becomes NRCHA Sponsor

The National Reined Cow Horse Association announced that its newest Sponsor, CowTrac Systems, had come on board shortly before the 2010 NRCHA World Championship Show Presented by John Deere.
NRCHA Sponsor Committee Chairman Carol Rose noted, "We are very pleased to have CowTrac Systems as part of the NRCHA Sponsor family. The system is an innovative training tool that helps promote the continued growth of the sport by allowing for repetitive training with little to no cattle cost. We appreciate Nelson's generosity and support of the NRCHA."
Seven years ago, Nelson Seiden and his wife, Colleen, became involved in reined cow horse competition. Living in Santa Cruz, California, meant that cattle were a scarce commodity. Although they had horses in training, they wanted to be able to work on the basics at home.
Thus CowTrac Systems was born in 2005. Seiden remembers, "I felt I could build something we could use. Over the next few years I refined it to the point I was able to show it to some professionals. With their help I was able to get it to be a good quality product."
The real benefit of the CowTrac System is that it is used in a controlled environment, and helps to teach and enforce herd work basics and fundamentals. "You can't get cattle to do the same thing over and over. So if you or your horse makes a mistake you might have to wait a while before the cow does the same thing. With our system, you can really work on any difficult areas," he said.
Along with setting up complimentary systems at NRCHA Premier events for exhibitors to use as a training tool, one system will be awarded at the Celebration of Champions, Stakes, Hackamore Classic, Derby, and Snaffle Bit Futurity. The system will be awarded to an aged event winner, except at the Celebration of Champions, where it was awarded to a 2009 World Champion - Non Pro Limited Champion Robin Murphy of San Antonio, Texas.
"It's just incredible to me how much fun the NRCHA and the sponsors have made this. It just makes me want to show in the NRCHA even more. I'm thrilled to have won the CowTrac System. What an opportunity and what a great gift. I've looked at them before and thought it would be fun to have - and now I have one! It made an awesome experience even better," Murphy said of her World Championship Show experience.
"We've been buckle sponsors for the past two years and thought this would be a good opportunity to increase our contribution to the organization," Nelson noted. "Our goal is to help improve the quality of the sport and to provide an economical method for people to develop their skill set."
CowTrac System's mechanical cow trains horses to work a cow, stop straight, improve roll backs and maintain proper position. The System is owned and endorsed by many of the top reined cow and cutting trainers likeAl Dunning, Bob Avila, Ken Wold,Ted Robinson, Todd Crawford,Benny Guitron, Russell Dilday,Tommy Thompson,Ron Emmons,Les Oswald, Wes Chappell, Kevin Stallings, Barbra Schulte, Rock Hedlund and Larry Trocha. For more information on CowTrac, visit the website at www.cowtrac.com.
The National Reined Cow Horse Association, now in its 61st year, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Markel Insurance Company, Wide World of Horses, John Deere, Adequan®, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News, Pfizer Animal Health, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Running W Designs, and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today's equine industry. But there’s more than titles and money to be won at the prestigious event – the prizes and awards are bountiful. So bountiful, in fact, few participants at any level of leave empty-handed.
In 2008, thanks in part to the sponsorship with Gist Silversmiths, the NRBC began to award beautiful, specially engraved Gist Silversmith trophy buckles to the high-point earners in many of the National Reining Horse Association Ancillary classes. The buckles were a huge hit with exhibitors, and five more buckles will be awarded in 2010 – bringing the total to 21!
“We are very excited that the Gist Silversmiths buckle program will be expanded in 2010. This is just one way for the NRBC to show its appreciation of the people who show in the NRHA classes, and are such an important part of the NRBC,” noted NRBC Secretary-Treasurer Cheryl Magoteaux.

Randy Paul Wins 2010 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman on Smokeelan

The Championship of the National Reined Cow Horse Association World’s Greatest Horseman contest held at the First Community Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, came down to the very last run. The four-event competition ended with Randy Paul being crowned as the World’s Greatest Horseman. Paul rode Smokeelan, owned by Jill Smiekel George, to the title.

Paul and Smokeelan, by Elans Playboy out of Smart Little Smokee, began the finals competition with a herd work run that placed him in a tie for seventh place. “I felt my horse wanted to be good in everything, but I had a little trouble getting good cattle in front of him. We were just average – but nothing bad happened so we were ok,” he explained.

Then it was time for the event that is Paul’s forte – the rein work. The accomplished trainer has earnings exceeding $1 million in National Reining Horse Association competition. “I knew I had a lot of horse for the rein work, so I pushed him. That caught me up pretty good.” Following the rein work Paul was in third place, only two points behind the leader.

The World’s Greatest Horseman is the only NRCHA Premier event that features steer stopping – and roping is an event that Smokeelan has only been working on since the first of January. “The steer ducked and dove down the arena. It took away from the run a little bit, but I think the judges appreciated how he handled the situation,” he said.

When it came down to the cow work, the Scottsdale, Arizona, trainer was in third place – eight points behind the leader, Doug Williamson. Williamson drew first in the cow work, and marked a 213 for an 873.5 composite. The next eight contestants took their shot, but no one managed to mark higher. Paul would need to score a 221 to win the title. “I tried not to let the pressure get to me. I knew I had a good chance because I have a good fence horse, but I just tried to do a good job.” His strategy paid off, resulting in a 223!

“It’s kind of hard to describe. It’s something you dream about when an event is started – it’s like a racecar driver winning Daytona,” he said following the awards ceremony. “When you’ve been striving for it and you finally get it done, it definitely feels like you accomplished something.”

Along with a check for $30,000, Paul and Smokeelan were awarded a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Coyote Rock Ranch, a Gist Silversmiths buckle from Wagonhound Land & Livestock, custom boots from Rios of Mercedes, and a monogrammed saddle pad from Classic Equine.

Doug Williamson and Hes Wright On, owned by Gardiner Quarter Horses, had the lead going into the cow work – but luck of the draw made marking a high score difficult. “You know, my horse was so solid all day. I just didn’t have a very good cow. I had a 71 cow, and that’s all I got out of him,” said Williamson. “My horse was solid the whole time, and I am very proud of him.”

Williamson collected $21,000 for the Reserve title, and also received a Gist Silversmiths buckle, sponsored by Garth and Amanda Gardiner, and a monogrammed saddle pad from Classic Equine.
Hes Wright On, by Lenas Wright On and out of Shesa Lota Nic, has been in Williamson’s program through his Derby years, and had won about $78,000 prior to the World’s Greatest Horseman. “He’s a winner because he can do it all. He’s a great rope horse, a great fence horse, and a great reiner. He’s also good out of the herd,” he explained.

When asked if he would be competing with Hes Wright On in the 2011 World’s Greatest Horseman, the NRCHA Hall of Fame member - who has been a World’s Greatest Horseman finalist four other times, and finished as high as Reserve – laughed and replied, “I think the Gardiners are going to make me do it again!”

There’s a deeper story - both men could do a clinic in perseverance, each having battled with cancer before going on to make even bigger marks on the industry. “I’m just glad to be here,” Paul noted. And Williamson, who along with having cancer suffered a terrifying fall at the 2008 Snaffle Bit Futurity added, “I thought they made this sport for me, so I’ll keep coming back.”

The NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman is held as part of the Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions. The Celebration of Champions also features the NRCHA World Championship Show Presented by John Deere, and the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby. Jay McLaughlin and Lil Miss Shiney Chex Wins NRCHA Open Bridle World Championship

The last of the 2009 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championships was decided Saturday afternoon at the First Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas. Twelve World titles were awarded during the NRCHA World Championship Show Presented by John Deere. The World Championship Show is part of the NRCHA Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions, which began January 30 and finishes on February 7.

Jay McLaughlin of Gainesville, Texas, won the Open Bridle World Championship on Lil Miss Shiney Chex, owned by Carol Rose. Their scores of 220.5 in the rein work and 225 in the cow work proved impossible to beat, resulting in an $8,428 payday, plus a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

“This mare is really sensitive to noises and crowds, so I stayed out back until it was time to go show. I just trotted in and she went right to work. She was good,” McLaughlin said of the Shining Spark mare, out of Lil Miss Smarty Chex. McLaughlin’s first cow was a little wild, so the judges called for a new one. “I actually liked the first cow I drew, but it didn’t handle. I didn’t think I was going to get another one, but it turned out alright.”

It was a whirlwind show for Team Rose. Earlier in the afternoon, McLaughlin won the Open Hackamore World Championship and earlier in the week took the Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby Open Championship on CD Dee Vee Dee. “We’ve had a tremendous week here. I keep thinking our luck will run out – but you make your own luck. When you go to a show you demonstrate what you’ve been doing at home. It definitely paid off. Jay did an outstanding job,” Rose said.

Dave Vietor and Master Visa came close to the World title – but their score of 443 was just shy of the win. Master Visa, by Master Remedy out of Shesa Lota Cash, is owned by Richard Willet. The Reserve Championship came with a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, and ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. Willett also took home $6,622.

Jay McLaughlin Wins 2009 Open Hackamore World Championship with CD Dee Vee Dee

The 2009 National Reined Cow Horse Association Open Hackamore World Championship went to Jay McLaughlin and CD Dee Vee Dee, who marked a 151 to take home $8,527. It was a bittersweet win for McLaughlin, who trained the talented gelding. CD Dee Vee Dee was bred and raised by Carol Rose, for whom McLaughlin is the head trainer. But he was recently sold to Shannon and Hershel Reid – and Jay showed him for the last time in San Angelo, Texas.

The NRCHA World Championship Show Presented by John Deere is held annually during the NRCHA Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions at the First Community Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas. It also features the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, and the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby.

Earlier in the week, McLaughlin showed the CD Lights gelding, out of Shiners Missy Jay, to the Circle Y Ranch Open Derby Championship.
On finals day the successful duo trotted into the arena, and paused for a long time in the middle of the arena. “We were there for a long time. We had a conversation. I told him it was a pleasure to train him and I just needed one more run. He took a big old breath, and then he did it!” McLaughlin added, “I have no idea how we did it. He was awesome. There was not one thing I’d change about anything.”

The competition was deep, with many fans commenting that it was the toughest Hackamore class they had ever seen. In fact, McLaughlin, who was the first entry in the class with his other entry, Genuine Masterpiece, thought he had won it with his first entry, with whom he tied for third. “I hadn’t seen many scores that high, and then Jake Telford came in on the mare and he was good!” McLaughlin said of Telford’s score of 450.

Along with the large check, McLaughlin received a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

Jake Telford and Spark N Loulena, owned by Newt White, earned the Reserve title and took home $6,674. The pair also received a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, an ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. Spark N Loulena is by Shining Spark and out of Mary Lou Lena.

Shining Lil Nic and Kevin Stallings Win 2009 NRCHA Open Two Rein World Championship

Kevin Stallings is a busy man – he qualified three horses for the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show Open Two Rein, and made the finals on all three! That would take a toll on anyone – but the Tucson, Arizona, trainer won not only the Championship, but also took home the Reserve title, and fourth place.
“I had a lot of great help today,” Stallings modestly answered when asked how he managed to show all of his mounts so well.

He won the World Championship on Shining Lil Nic, a 7-year-old stallion by Smart Shiner out of Dig A Lil Nic. A nice rein work put him in great position for the fence work. “He was just really good. When I wanted to go fast he went fast, and he guided well. I felt like I could really ask him,” he explained. “The cow was pretty good on the end. I did work him just a little longer than I normally would because the cow wouldn’t move a whole lot. I tried to get just a little more feel.”

Apparently his strategy worked, as the judges rewarded the rein work with a 217 and a 225 in the cow work. The win netted a check for $4,755, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land and Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative world finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

“He’s just so willing,” said Stallings of Shining Lil Nic, owned by Bill and Janiejill Tointon. “I thank Bill and Janiejill for giving me the opportunity to ride such a great horse. I also thank my wife, Karen.”

With Voodoo Chic, Stallings won the Reserve title with a 434 total. Voodoo Chic is owned by Rogers Heaven Sent Ranch, and collected $3,804. The Reserve title came with a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, a pair of Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, an ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative world finals vest from Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

I bought her when she was six, because I was just getting into the cow horses and wanted to show a bridle horse,” Tointon explained. “We’ve been breeding her – she has six foals. Shiners Hot Flash’s owner Nikki Miller, was on-hand for the Finals, although she had missed the preliminary competition. “I was really nervous, and I knew if I was here watching her show in the prelims I’d be a wreck, so I stayed home and said if she made the finals I’d come, so I’m here!” Miller collected a check for $3,857, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

“I’m in shock. Truly in shock – but that’s ok! I’ll take it,” Murphy said after her win. “I love to ride, but my first show was in Ardmore, Oklahoma in August. This is my adult dream. I wanted to learn and am still learning – but this is a gift to myself.”
Murphy and Instantee, nicknamed Tyson, won the class and $3,001 with a 434.5. The San Antonio, Texas, Non Pro took home a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

Waylon Widler and Heza Especially Foru Win Youth Limited at 2009 NRCHA World Championship Show

Waylon Widler and Heza Especially Foru Win Youth Limited at 2009 NRCHA World Championship Show

It was his first National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show, and Waylon Widler was a little nervous. But following the awards ceremony in the First Community Credit Union Spur Arena, the 11-year-old competitor was all smiles. With Heza Especially Foru, he had marked a 435.5 in the Youth Limited Finals, and won the 2009 NRCHA Youth Limited World Championship!

“I was a little nervous in the beginning, but after our first small slow I felt better. I didn’t know if we were going too fast on the large fast circles – but it got better and better as we went.” He smiled, adding, “Our cow work was good because he knows what to do, and I just let him do what he wants.”

For the title, Waylon received a check for $495, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, a Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

Heza Especially Foru, nicknamed “W” because he was born during President George W. Bush’s election year, is owned by Waylon’s mother, Karen Widler. Waylon has been riding the 10-year-old gelding, by Little Peppy Special and out of Jabos Chocolate, since the summer of 2009. “He’s very experienced. He tattles on me when I don’t do stuff right. He might know exactly what to do, but if I tell him something wrong he’ll still do what I told him,” admitted Widler, of Burneyville, Oklahoma.

Donathon Archuleta, of Alamosa, Colorado, who was the Youth Limited Champion at the 2009 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, won the Youth Limited Reserve title on Boonlights Misty, a 7-year-old mare by Boonlight Dancer out of Sweet Little Mist. During the finals, they earned a 427 composite, good for $413. Archuleta also received a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, and ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

McKenzie Merrill and Ill Be Skeets Win 2010 Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Non Pro Derby

The Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby – the first event of the 2010 National Reined Cow Horse Association Fort Dodge Celebration of Champions, which also features the World’s Greatest Horseman and the NRCHA World Championship Show, presented by John Deere – ended Monday, February 1. Throughout the three days of competition, the event paid out over $95,000.
In the Non Pro Division, McKenzie Merrill topped the class with a composite score of 430 on Ill Be Skeets, collecting a check for $2,484.
The Dallas, Texas, Non Pro and her 4-year-old had a healthy lead coming into the cow work phase of the event – but it wasn’t her plan to be cautious with that advantage. “I knew I wanted to be aggressive. I didn’t want to play it safe because there are a bunch of tough Non Pros,” she explained. And while she didn’t mark the high cow work score, she did mark the fourth high score – high enough to clinch the title.
“I’m really happy. He’s a show horse. He’s a little quirky, but he knows when it is time to be serious,” she said. Ill Be Skeets, by Skeets Peppy out of Oak Ill Be, has definitely performed for Merrill. At the 2009 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, they won the Intermediate Non Pro Futurity and were Reserve Champions in the Non Pro division.
Tish Wilhite earned Reserve honors in the Non Pro division, and topped the Intermediate Non Pro on The Fresno Fox, a 4-year-old gelding by Heart Of A Fox out of Oaks Jewel Doll. Between the two divisions, Wilhite took home $3,070.
Wilhite, of Clovis, California, purchased The Fresno Fox as a 2-year-old, and showed him at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nevada – but didn’t have great results. “He was really good, but he felt so good in the reining I overspun! So this is our first big show since then,” she explained.
As it so often does in reined cow horse competition, the Intermediate Non Pro title came down to the cow work. “Cow work is always the luck of the draw. I got a good one, and my horse was exceptionally good today,” noted Wilhite.
Karla Rogers won the Intermediate Non Pro Reserve Championship and $788 on Dee Chul Chic (Chula Dual x Dee Boogaloo Chic) with a 412.5. Dee Chul Chic is owned by Brittany Rogers, of Portales, New Mexico.
Dennis Moreland of Weatherford, Texas, topped the Amateur division on his Getthecashsybil with a 412. While Moreland admitted that he could have been a little softer in the herd work, the rein work and cow work were successful. “I had the best reining run I’ve ever had. And she was real good down the fence – I didn’t fall off,” he said, laughing.
Moreland purchased the mare as a weanling, and the Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby was one of her first shows. “I’m sixty years old and just started this a year and a half ago. Bozo Rogers definitely deserves lots and lots of credit,” he said, crediting his trainer.
Nickey Smith, of Franklinton, Louisiana, earned the Amateur Reserve Championship with a 411. With his horse HA Chairman Mystique (Im Chairman x Hopefully Fletch) collected $1,318.
The National Reined Cow Horse Association, now in its 61st year, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Rein In Cancer Continues to Raise Big Money for Cancer Research

Recent fund-raising efforts at some of the Nation’s largest equine events have raised over $35,000 for Rein In Cancer. Rein In Cancer, which raises money to fight all types of cancer and aid those fighting the disease, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to date. Rein In Cancer has contributed greatly to its main beneficiary, the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Center at the University of Oklahoma Cancer Institute.

Thanks to the strong support of the equine community, the money raised continues to grow. At the 42nd Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress, held October 2 through 25, nearly $34,000 for Rein In Cancer, announced Short Koger, Co-Founder of Rein In Cancer.

The live auction of many donated items was run by the Congress Queen contestants and brought in $32,000. Koger, who owns Shorts Hattery, sold $1,818 worth of Rein In Cancer pins and raffle tickets for a beautiful saddle sponsored by Shortys Hattery, Jud Little, and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

The Southwest Reining Horse Association teamed up once again with Rein In Cancer, hosting the Performance Halter and Pleasure Classes during the SWRHA Futurity and Horse Show in mid-October. A silent Auction was also held, with all the money raised going to Rein In Cancer. The donations and the bids at the event garnered funds for the cause for the second consecutive year.

At the Western States Cutting Horse Association Year-End Weekend Show, hosted by the Western States Cutting Horse Association, a Pink Day and Bridleless cutting competition was held. The proceeds were split between the Denver Children’s Hospital and Rein In Cancer, with almost $3,000 going to Rein In Cancer.

“The generosity of everyone from all aspects of the equine industry is astounding and humbling. This disease affects everyone, and we hope that, with help from Rein In Cancer, a cure can eventually be found,” noted Rein In Cancer Co-Founder Cheryl Magoteaux.

NRHA FUTURITY / DERBY NOMINATIONS UP 11%

Oklahoma City, OK – December 22, 2009 – National Reining Horse Association Futurity / Derby Nomination Program numbers are easily pushing ahead of 2008 year-to-date comparisons. With the deadline a little more than a week away, nominations are up 11% with 1,095 foals nominated (984 in 2008).

“This is a great indicator for the strength of the Reining industry as we move into a new year. We are very thrilled to see the number of nominations coming into the office. We are pleased knowing that with every nomination we receive, even more money will be added to purses in all divisions of the NRHA Futurity and Derby,” commented NRHA Executive Director Dan Wall.

The deadline to nominate is December 31. Horsemen can get the best deal by nominating weanlings for $300.

The yearling fee is $2,000 and can be made in two payments. $1,000 can be paid by December 31st of the nominee’s yearling year, and the remaining $1,000 can be paid by December 31st of its two-year-old year.

The NRHA Futurity / Derby Nomination Program began with 2008 foals and consists of a $300 one-time weanling nomination fee. This fee makes nominated foals eligible to enter the NRHA Futurity as three-year-olds, NRHA European Futurity as four-year-olds, and the NRHA Derby as four-, five- and six-year-olds. At that time, all other applicable entry and judges fees will apply. Nominations must be postmarked on or before December 31 of the applicable year.

Talented American Paint Horse wins NRHA open futurity

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—A talented American Paint Horse stallion, Gunnatrashya, captured the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Open Futurity title in Oklahoma City recently, outscoring over 400 horses entered in the open division of this event, according to NRHA officials. The Paint stallion won with an outstanding score of 228.5, earning $125,000 in prize money.

This is only the second time in history that an American Paint Horse has won this prestigious event. Gunnatrashya now joins RR Star, who won the event in 2001.

Going into the finals, Gunnatrashya was trailing by a close margin of 1.5 points for second place behind Kaystein after the opening two rounds. But after an outstanding finals performance, Gunnatrashya clenched the win.

Gunnatrashya is owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA in Weatherford, Texas, and was ridden to the victory by top NRHA rider Shawn Flarida of Springfield, Ohio. The 3-year-old solid sorrel stallion is a registered Paint Horse sired by Colonels Smokingun, known simply as “Gunner” in the reining world. Gunner is the first million-dollar Paint sire in NRHA history, as well as the highest-earning Paint Horse performer in NRHA history.

The colt is out of Natrasha who is by Trashadeous.

“He’s been one of my favorites all year long,” said Flarida. “ I knew when we were done that he had performed really well. I knew my horse was as good as he could be, and I didn’t make any mistakes. This horse is just really special, so much feel and talent.”

Archese Quarter Horses USA purchased the horse in May 2009, sight unseen, from Bill Horn and John Dorminy according to Flarida. John and Katarina Dorminy of Fitzgerald, Ga. bred this horse and own the dam. Katarina Dorminy shows in the Non-Pro division of NRHA. Eleuterio Archese is from Italy where he is in the transportation business, and has a farm in Weatherford, Texas. He is a long-time client of Flarida and he has been around the reining horse industry for many years and is a NRHA Hall of Fame owner. He owned horses that won the NRHA Futurity and Derby with Wimpys Little Chick and the NRHA Derby with Walla Walla Whiz, which Flarida rode for him as well.

There were close to 1,600 total horses entered to compete in this event, their second-highest entries to date according to NRHA officials. Several other Paint Horses were finalists and leaders in their divisions at the NRHA Futurity.

CELEBRITY SLIDE BROUGHT SMILES AND SLIDES TO MAKE-A-WISH CHILDREN

Oklahoma City, OK – December 9, 2009 – Celebrities and professional bull riders set to the Oklahoma State Fair Arena to test their skills on highly-trained reining horses during the Reining Horse Sports Foundation’s (RHSF) 4R Performance Horses Celebrity Slide benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oklahoma. The RHSF welcomed celebrities including Emmy award wining actor William Shatner, jewelry designer David Yurman, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett, TLC’s design show star Christi Proctor, and Tulsa Morning Anchor Kristin Dickerson; plus four of the world’s greatest professional bull riding celebrities, including JW Hart, Cody Lambert, Adriano Moraes and Mike Lee. Sgt. Danny New of the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command rounded out the field to help pay tribute to the men and women of the military. As well as having the top reiners in the NRHA as their coaches, eleven Make-A-Wish children served as honorary coaches for the celebrities. The special event was held in conjunction with the 2009 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The evening was a great success for the RHSF and the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oklahoma. Everyone in the house was touched as the Make-A-Wish kids were introduced and escorted into the arena by their team member celebrities and top NRHA reiners. The audience had the opportunity to hear the kids talk about their illnesses, as well as their excitement about being involved in the Celebrity Slide as an honorary coach. Their families, RHSF Directors and many Make-A-Wish volunteers spent the day with the kids making every moment special.

Obviously the night was all about the Make-A-Wish kids, but there was a hint of competition in the air as the new reiners wanted to show off their new found skills and see who could take home bragging rights as the best celebrity reiner. Lyle Lovett took top honors in the class for the second year with Kristin Dickerson and Sgt. Danny New among the top three competitors.

Lovett rode 2008 NRHA Derby finalist Smart And Shiney with NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider Tim McQuay sharing his expertise with Make-A-Wish coach Asha assisting. “It’s such a wonderful opportunity to meet these children. And it’s truly a testament to what NRHA is all about,” commented Lovett after his run.

The rest of the field put on an amazing display of Reining with a whole lot of fun in the mix riding to songs each child selected for them. Their generosity showed through with each smile and hug they gave the kids. And the reining horses played their part well helping each rider learn more about the sport thanks to their owners who donated them for the evening.

The heart-touching evening ended with a Celebrity VIP Reception that allowed all the children, their families and celebrities to enjoy more time together and bask in the glow of a wonderful day. The reception was hosted by the RHSF and 4R Performance Horses. Guests paid $100 a ticket for an up close and personal visit with the celebrities. A benefit auction and surprise live entertainment from Lyle Lovett, Randy Paul and Paul Bogart ended the day on a high note.

The RHSF is grateful to event sponsor 4R Performance Horses and the many volunteers who’ve given so generously of their time and resources to make this “wish” come true. 4R Performance Horses is owned and operated by Dwaine & Judith Rivers, together with their two daughters. They are located just minutes north of San Antonio in Boerne, Texas and specialize in raising, showing & selling reining horses. They have paid special attention to selecting top quality broodmares, with each of them performing in the show pen, and stallions that are proven performers, with some of the best bloodlines the industry has to offer. 4R Performance Horses can be found on the web at 4rperformancehorses.com.
