CELEBRATING THE MORGAN HORSE IN LEXINGTON

SHELBURNE, VT—The Morgan horse breed was celebrated in Lexington, Kentucky, at the 2010 American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) Annual Convention, held February 17-20.

"The true measure of a successful convention is the satisfaction and feedback the Board and staff hear from attendees," said AMHA Executive Director, Julie M. Broadway. "By all accounts, the 2010 convention was not only successful in terms of being educational and informative, but fun too! The convention committee did a great job with fabulous farm tours, great historical topics, and some excellent present day learning experiences. We had something for everyone."

This year's event started Wednesday evening, February 17, with a welcome party and stallion presentation at Bill and Sammi Hazen's PlayMor Farm in Lexington. Thursday morning buses were loaded to take attendees on a day-long farm tour to nearby Dragonsmeade and Saralin Morgan horse farms; Keeneland, where they toured tour the country's top Thoroughbred facility; and the Kentucky Horse Park. At the Annual Meeting of Members, Cindy Mugnier of Belchertown, Massachusetts, was re-elected as AMHA president for her third term as well as a Region 1 director. Sara Foy of Kingston, New Hampshire, was re-elected to represent Region 1 on the AMHA Board of Directors; Kathy Newcomb of Stockton, New Jersey, and Sharon Skelly of Byron, New York, were elected to serve Region 2; Linnea Sidi of Loveland, Colorado, was re-elected to represent Region 9; and Bill Pettis of Linden, California, was re-elected for a second term to serve as Director at Large.

The AMHA/World Morgan Futurity Stallion Service Auction raised nearly $80,000, which will be distributed to the AMHA Marketing Program, World Morgan Futurity, AMHA regional horse shows, and the AMHA Show Grant Program. The top-selling stallion's service went to Mizrahi for $5,800, a multi world champion. In addition, $2,300 was raised for the American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust, $2,700 will benefit the AMHA Legal Defense Fund, and $300 was raised for the youth program's charitable campaign, Justin Time for a Cure.

"Lexington, Kentucky, was the perfect venue for Morgan enthusiasts to gather for our annual convention," said Erica Richard, AMHA Registrar and Convention Liaison. "Old friendships were rekindled and new friendships were made. The AMHA/WMF Stallion Service Auction was an overwhelming success raising almost $88,000 for various aspects of the Morgan community. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time and effort. Events such as this one would not be possible without their uncompromised support!"

VERMONT NATIONAL GUARD UNIT NAMED "TASK FORCE MORGAN"

SHELBURNE, VT—The 340 members of Vermont's National Guard 172nd Cavalry Squadron have taken the name "Task Force Morgan" for their upcoming mission. The group left Vermont on December 11 to take part in combat training in Indiana.

The Morgan horse is closely related to Vermont and its military history, playing an important role in many of the state's Civil War battles.

"We thought Task Force Morgan was appropriate, especially since this is the first opportunity for the 172nd Cavalry to go into theater as a unit," Captain Christopher Gookin told The Burlington Free Press, Vermont's largest newspaper. "We're conscious of our cavalry forebears, and we wanted especially to live up to those deeds and attributes."

"We are honored that the Vermont squadron chose the Morgan as its moniker," said Julie Broadway, executive director for the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA). "The great traits of the Morgan are so fitting for this squad and this mission. Morgans are known for their great attitudes, superb work ethics, stamina, and versatility.

"It's also very fitting and appropriate to honor that rich history the breed has with the military and Vermont. After all, the Morgan is the state animal and the organization is headquartered in Vermont. This is really special also given that AMHA is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year!"

AMHA will be in touch with the squad in the coming month to determine how the Board of Directors, staff, and its members can provide care packages.

Founded in 1909, the American Morgan Horse Association is a non-profit organization serving more than 50,000 Morgan horse owners, breeders, exhibitors, and enthusiasts throughout the United States. KENTUCKY HORSE PARK ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF MORGAN HORSE PAVILION

American Morgan Horse Institute Signs 99-Year Lease with Park

LEXINGTON, KY (August 18, 2009) The American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI) has signed a 99-year lease with the Kentucky Horse Park for the site on which the 22,000-square-foot, three-story Morgan Horse Pavilion will be constructed. The Pavilion will be the 34th member of the Kentucky Horse Park's National Horse Center - an equine office park for regional, state and national equine organizations. The AMHI headquarters will remain in Vermont.

"The Kentucky Horse Park facility is a wonderful opportunity for the Morgan horse community to showcase our beautiful breed," said Bob Morgan, AMHI president and member of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board of Directors. "Opening our pavilion in concert with the World Equestrian Games gives us a unique opportunity to publicize the horse we love to a worldwide audience."

John Nicholson, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park stated, "Our National Horse Center continues to draw the finest equestrian organizations to the Kentucky Horse Park, bringing jobs, capital, and revenue into the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Morgan Horse Institute is the most recent national organization which has chosen to have a strong presence here, and we are honored and excited to have their Morgan Horse Pavilion at our facility.

"The Pavilion will also add to the park's ability to attract more tourists to Kentucky. The Morgan horse has a rich and noble history, and we look forward to sharing that history with tens of thousands of park visitors each year."

The Pavilion has been designed by Yum Kee Fu. Mr. Fu, owner of Winchester, Kentucky-based Dragonsmeade Farm, donated his architectural services. Morton Building Corporation is the general contractor and builder. The focus of the building will combine the educational with entertainment within the context of a "green" facility based on geothermal principles; Solar Design of Louisville, Kentucky is the solar designer.

"The open, airy, elegant design will house exhibits with a family-oriented, interactive, educational approach," said Elaine Galatz, Chair of the Pavilion Committee. "The Committee is thrilled to see its vision becoming a reality to share with Morgan horse lovers and those new to our breed."

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the park on August 28 at 10:30am. Construction will begin in September and will be completed for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™.

Many horsemen consider the Games to be more important than the Olympics!

In an effort to have Morgan representation in one of the four different presentations, AMHA, in conjunction with its ten Regional Shows, will be holding a "Morgan Idol" contest across the country.      Finalists will be invited by September 1 to perform at the 2009 Grand National & World Championship Show in Oklahoma, October 10-17!

"The weather cooperated for great farm tours, attendance was strong, and all the seminars were well attended. Each party was fun and upbeat, and fundraising was very successful! Everything was smooth and seamless, and a great time was had by all."

Special recognition was given to Georgie Green of Morgan Mill, Texas, who recently retired from representing Region 6 for nearly 30 years. Green was first elected to the AMHA Board of Directors in 1982. She was named AMHA Woman of the Year in 1985, the same year she was elected the first female president, a position she held from 1985-1988, and again from 1993-1996. She has served on, and frequently chaired, the AMHA Executive, Finance, Registry, Marketing, Media Steering, and Bylaws Committees.
