The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) would like to congratulate Leslie Foxvog of Phelan, Calif., the 2009 recipient of the George Hatley Award.

Leslie has been an ApHC member for over 10 years, and actively promotes the Appaloosa breed. She is a member of several Regional Clubs in her area, and is currently the Calizona ApHC’s president. Leslie has been instrumental in Calizona ApHC’s two consecutive wins for the ApHC’s Regional Exemplary Award, which offers Regional Clubs the opportunity to win prizes and recognition by displaying the club’s efforts to promote the Appaloosa breed.

Leslie is also an active member of the Cal-Western ApHC, soon to be known as the Western States Appaloosa Association. In 2009, the Cal-Western elected her as the 2008 Appaloosatarian of the Year for her tireless effort promoting the breed, the club and its events.

While her contributions to the Appaloosa have been notable in the past decade, Leslie went above and beyond the call of duty in 2009. Leslie championed for the Calizona ApHC parade group to be a part of the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade with the theme “A Cut Above the Rest,” which will be featured live on national television Jan. 1, 2010. The group will ride Appaloosas with varying color coat patterns and will be costumed in authentic Nez Perce Indian costumes for both men and women, along with related accoutrements—an excellent opportunity to display the breed’s history and heritage.

The George Hatley Award, named in honor of one of the ApHC’s founders, is decided annually by the Board of Directors in an effort to recognize an individual in the Appaloosa industry who contributed significantly to the growth and promotion of the Appaloosa breed within the past year.

ApHC PROUD TO ANNOUNCE 2009 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

MOSCOW, Idaho— The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is proud to announce the induction of five pillars of the Appaloosa community into the Hall of Fame: Victoria Ennis of Kingston, Okla., former ApHC Director Ward Fenton of Worden, Mont. and Karen Grimm of Minden, Nev., as well as Appaloosa stallion Maid’s Dream, owned by Dal Porto Ranch in Brentwood, Calif.
Victoria Ennis was inducted for making her mark in the Appaloosa industry, though racing was her specialty. After becoming a member in 1985, Victoria cultivated a breeding program that produced fine Appaloosas. Merry Weedo, an Appaloosa mare inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, was Victoria’s first foray into the Appaloosa world. Victoria went on to own many horses, and some of the industry’s most famous names could be found at Texoma Appaloosas in Kingston, Okla., including racing stallions I Love Willie and Mr Spotted Bull. It is with great pride that the ApHC inducts Victoria into the Hall of Fame after her passing earlier this year.

Ward Fenton was a prime candidate for the Hall of Fame after his nearly 50 years of dedication to the Appaloosa breed. Ward became an active ApHC member in 1964 as an Appaloosa breeder, show participant and judge. In 1977, Ward was elected to the ApHC Board of Directors, and he served on the racing, regional, rules and youth committees. The ApHC is proud to induct Ward, who is often described as “an accomplished horseman and influential breeder,” into the Hall of Fame.

Karen Grimm has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for her unwavering commitment to the Appaloosa breed during the past 25 years. Over the years, Karen’s breeding program produced numerous National and World Champions as well as many medallion winners including recent success Mr. Big Bucks. Karen has also experienced success in the show ring as a non-pro exhibitor, amassing nearly 550 non-pro points in her lifetime. She made it possible for others to enjoy their Appaloosa by hosting two regional shows, including the Hump-day Classic and the Nevada Color Classic. Karen’s contributions make her a worthy inductee into the ApHC Hall of Fame.

Maid’s Dream (Dreamfinder x Wapiti’s Maid) is one of two Appaloosas to be inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2009. Maid’s Dream has sired more than 300 foals, including many National and World Champions, more than 100 Register of Merit winners, 21 Bronze Medallion winners, over 20 Superior Halter title earners and more. Maid’s Dream is a superior example of the breed!

Candidates are nominated for Hall of Fame induction by ApHC membership for having a favorable impact in the Appaloosa industry at a regional or national level. Nominees are voted on by the ApHC Board of Directors. Inductees are honored with an engraved plaque featuring the inductee’s photograph and brief biography on display at the Appaloosa Museum & Heritage Center; they will be recognized June 27 at the Open/Non-Pro 2009 Year-End Banquet held in conjunction with the 63rd National Appaloosa Show & 2010 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show in Jackson, Miss., June 21-July 3. For additional information and tickets, please call the ApHC at 208-882-5578.

APPALOOSAS AND CHARITY FEATURED ON THE EVE OF HALLOWEEN

FORT WORTH, Texas— The evening before Halloween is often referred to as “Mischief Night,” and while there may have been tricks throughout the nation, there were only treats Oct. 30 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas! The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) hosted an evening of charity and fun during the 2009 World Championship Appaloosa Show, held Oct. 23–31, 2009.

The ApHC joined forces with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to host a Toys for Tots fundraiser in hopes of making the holiday season a little brighter for local Fort Worth families. More than $1,600 was raised and quite a few toys were collected! The ApHC would like to thank the Marines who generously donated their time to collect donations as well as Marine Aircraft Group (MAG-)41 who provided the color guard opening ceremony.

After the National Anthem, the festivities were started with a Calcutta fundraiser. Eight ladies who specialize in Western Pleasure or Hunter Under Saddle volunteered to compete in the chaos that is the Appaloosa Rope Race, the equine version of musical chairs. The ladies and their Appaloosas were auctioned off to compete on behalf of their highest bidder, with half of the pot going to the Appaloosa Youth Association and the Appaloosa Youth Foundation Scholarship Fund, with the remainder awarded to the bidder of the winning rider. Shawn Reynolds of Columbus, N.J., was the lucky bidder who won $1,175 of the $2,350 pot. However, Reynolds graciously donated his portion to the AYA Scholarship Foundation!

The evening concluded with Freestyle Reining, which is a technical reining pattern coordinated with music and, in many cases, costumes. The Appaloosa breed is often noted for having the most creative and entertaining Freestyle Reining performances in the industry, and these performances were no exception.

The evening began with the Wicked Witch of the West, aboard her flying monkey, performing to the music of Rick James’ “Superfreak.” Throughout the competition, spectators enjoyed appearances from the Blues Brothers, Bumblebee from “Transformers,” the Grim Reaper, musical sensation Lady Gaga, Santa Claus, Uncle Sam and many more. Each contestant performed exciting reining maneuvers with a creative act to match.

The night ended with first place being a tie—Ima Frosty Lena, owned by Stuart Millstone of Orange Park, Fla., and exhibitor Theresa Pennington earned high marks with their Transformer-themed performance, tying with another exceptional performer, Who Whuz It, owned and exhibited by Leslie Temple of Granbury, Texas, who stormed the arena with a wild performance from the Grim Reaper. The two exhibitors chose to share first place and split first and second place monies totaling $3,500. The total purse for the class was more than $5,000, and generously sponsored by Ron Landeck.

New Appaloosa Club Formed

July 14th, 2009 – Las Vegas, NV

The oil-rich, Gulf countries of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman comprise the geographical region covered by the newly formed Dubai / GCC Appaloosa Horse Association. Dubai, one of seven states, or Emirates, in the United Arab Emirates, will be the headquarters for the DGCCAHA and will serve as a point of contact for those interested in learning more about the Appaloosa breed.

The goal of the DGCCAHA is to promote the versatility of the Appaloosa breed and to educate and assist the region in the acquisition of Appaloosa horses.

Carolyn Munson, Chairman of the Dubai / GCC Appaloosa Horse Association, and a resident of Dubai for more than 10 years, is committed to building the halter and pleasure horse industry in the Gulf countries.

“I am certain that the unique color and the disposition of the Appaloosa will prove attractive to the Arab market,” Munson said. “We are already fielding inquiries from the U.A.E. and a contingency from Saudi Arabia that view the appaloosa horse as a novelty for now, but an industry will develop over time. It’s our goal to advance opportunities for breeders and trainers in America by exporting quality and color to this untapped marketplace.”

There is ancient history of horsemanship in the Gulf region. Dubai hosts the Dubai World Cup in March, known as the “World’s Richest Horse Race” with a 2009 purse of more than $6 million. There are numerous shows, jumping, endurance and racing events annually that attract avid equestrians from all over the world.

A web site for the association is in development and there are plans to participate in regional equestrian exhibitions in 2010.

To learn more about the DGCCAHA, please contact Carolyn Munson at (941) 322-6222 or via e-mail at mail@dgccaha.com. In the Gulf Region (Dubai), please contact Roxanne Nilay, DGCCAHA Secretary, at +97150 9540080.

APPALOOSAS RETURN TO JACKSON FOR 62ND NATIONAL APPALOOSA SHOW

The 13-day Event will be held June 22–July 4 at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds

JACKSON, Miss.–The weather is warmer and days are longer—summer is just around the corner! Summer means the world’s most colorful equine is coming to Jackson, Miss.! The 62nd National Appaloosa Show & 2009 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show will be held at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson, June 22-July 4. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) would like to invite Appaloosa fans and general equine enthusiasts to join us and watch hundreds of Appaloosa horses from throughout the nation display their talent, versatility and color.

The National Appaloosa Show is the longest-running, single-breed horse show in the United States. Now spread around the world, the Appaloosa breed was rescued from obscurity by a handful of pioneer breeders whose first National Show, held two years after the end of World War II, drew 50 horses to a small fairgrounds in Lewiston, Idaho. The colorfully spotted Appaloosa is now consistently one of the top-10 favorite horse breeds in the country.

The first week of the 13-day event will focus on open and adult non-pro competition, followed by youth competitors showing off their skills in the second week. Spectators can expect to see Appaloosas performing in classes ranging from cutting and jumping to horse-against-horse races and halter.

Appaloosas will be competing for charity on Friday, June 26. The ApHC will be collecting cash and/or new, unwrapped toys as admittance for the Appaloosa Evening Performance on behalf of the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children. This is a wonderful opportunity to support Mississippi’s only hospital devoted to the care and treatment of ailing children, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

The 62nd National Appaloosa Show & 2009 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show isn’t just about competition—take a break from the show ring and go shopping at the 2009 Cowboy Way Trading Post in the Mississippi Trade Mart on the fairgrounds! The gift expo will feature thousands of items, including tack, fine jewelry, furniture, home décor, apparel, trucks, horse trailers and more. The Cowboy Way Trading Post will be open each day of the event from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For amazing deals, make a date to shop during the Moonlight Madness Sale, Friday, June 26, from 10 p.m. to midnight.
