Nation’s Equine Celebrities are coming to Northwest Washington!
The Northwest Washington Fair is very excited to be producing their 1st Annual Horse Expo on October 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2012. For the first time, Cowboy Hall of Fame clinician, Craig Cameron and the Extreme Cowboy Race, will be bringing fast paced fun to Northwest Washington. Richard Shrake, with Resistance Free Training, has been inducted into the International Equestrian Masters Hall of Fame and will be sharing inspiring horsemanship tips. Also demonstrating will be Greg Best, two-time Olympic Silver Medalist in Show Jumping, and Raye Lochert with practical horsemanshp. These are just a few of the equine celebrities coming out west.
One of the highlighted events will be the Book Corral!
Six west coast writers, including Washington State Governor’s Writers Award winner Jana Harris, will present their books at the Northwest Washington Horse Expo as part of a special Book Corral. The variety of equine related works includes both fiction and non-fiction. Harris, a creative writing teacher at University of Washington, will present her recently released memoir Horses Never Lie About Love and also give a short presentation on October 6 and 7 on the topic of “Writing Horses.” Other authors include Californian Denise Branco with her award winning memoir Horse at the Corner Post and Canadian Paddy Head with Fixed, the first of a trilogy of novels inspired by her real life experiences working as a jockey. Those who learned from Leigh Goodison-Grieve’s series of articles on horse trailer maintenance published in the Northwest Horse Source won’t want to miss her new book, The Secret Lives of Horse Trailers, which Leigh will present at the expo. And during the Book Corral, anyone who desires to learn more about the growing field of equine facilitated psychotherapy and learning will be able to meet a pioneer and professional in the field—Leigh Shambo. The first person to formally study the long term benefits of using horses in mental health therapy, Shambo will be presenting her brand new book, The Listening Heart. Lastly, Northwest Horse Source editor, Catherine Madera will present her new work of fiction, Rain Shadow, and speak to aspiring writers on the subject of equine journalism. Jana is going to give us an awesome opportunity in the Book Corral with her presentation on Writing Horses: "Fun mini creative writing class on Writing Horses from award-winning author and University of Washington professor Jana Harris. Bring pen and paper!" Jana will do this from 11:30-12:30 on Saturday and Sunday. I will offer "Breaking Into Equine Journalism: Tips from NW Horse Source editor Catherine Madera," from 2-3 on Saturday and Sunday. All authors will do readings and these will be listed on a schedule by the Book Corral.
Cover Art by Shelly De-Boer, Northwest Artist and Horse Woman
Cover artist Shelly De-Boer grew up on Kodiak Island, off the southern coast of Alaska, 45 miles away from the nearest town. She describes her early life as “pretty simple,” filled with art and the company of a Morgan horse named Daisy. Daisy, now 35, is retired and lives in De Boer’s backyard in Whatcom County.
“Art, for me, is trying to capture God’s great canvas by the smallest pixel one can imagine,” says De Boer. “There are moments in time that still one’s heart; those are the ones I wish to capture.”
De Boer’s painting, “Harvest of Illusions,” was inspired by the beautiful baroque horse. She tried to achieve many visual planes with as little medium as possible. For more information on Shelly De Boer’s art visit www.faithequestriancenter.com or call 360-510-9656
