I recently visited this 70 acre facility located at 7981 Blaine Road in Blaine, Washington. It’s only five miles from my house so I certainly need to take advantage of such a nice facility so close to home. Roger Edmonds, a member of Friends of Sunset Farm (FOSF), gave me a guided tour of the facility’s latest improvements which include a large outdoor arena providing year-round riding.
The property was originally obtained in 1994 with half the value being donated by Kay Lowery and the residual paid by a grant from Washington Wildlife and Recreation. It is owned by Whatcom County Parks and Recreation, but managed by The Friends of Sunset Farm, a non-profit organization formed to support, maintain and raise funds. The Farm is a wonderful asset for horse owners in our area.
During the spring and summer months a beautiful cross-country course is used for several competitions and available for enthusiasts to practice their jumping skills. There are several paddocks for overnight use, a large gravel parking lot, miles of trails, and a round pen for people to utilize. The park asks a mere $5 donation for each horse that uses the facility. Future plans include a mountain trail course, additional paddocks, extended gravel parking area, all-weather footing for round pen, a second outdoor arena, and RV parking with hookups and lighting. It’s a great place to host shows and activities for a minimal fee.
Donations of time, money and materials are always welcomed and appreciated. If you’re interested in using and supporting this facility visit www.friendsofsunsetfarm.org or email
