Resolve to Keep Your Computer Safe and Secure in the New Year
Doug DeVries, Equine Design
January 2007

Printer friendly page

Welcome to the New Year …time to get serious about

protecting your computer. Viruses, worms and spyware

are no longer just irritating flies in your computer day.

These hidden programs, launched by the very dark

side of the computer world, would love to control your

computer.

If your computer is not protected when you connect

to the Internet, hackers can gain access to personal

information on your computer. They can install a

code on your computer that destroys files or causes

malfunctions. They can also use your computer

to cause problems on other home and business

computers connected to the Internet.

Use a Firewall

A firewall is a piece of software or hardware (like a

router) that helps screen out hackers, viruses and

worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet.

If you are a home user or small business user, a

firewall is the most effective and important first step

you can take to help protect your computer.

Keep Your Computer Updated With

Microsoft Updates

This is a simple essential step for all computers running

Microsoft Windows. Be sure these updates are

being downloaded automatically. Right-click on the

My Computer icon and choose Proper ties. On the

“Automatic Updates” tab, select either “Automatic”

or “Download updates…”. These will ensure that your

computer stays current.

Install and Keep Updated Antivirus &

Antispyware Software

There is no excuse to not have these on your computer.

Download free antispyware or antivirus software. Two

recommendations: Windows Defender for spyware (free

from www.microsoft.com’s Downloads section) and AVG

for antivirus (free from www.free.grisoft.com)

Internet Explorer 7 is an automatic update from Microsoft

as well. It has enhanced security features as well

as some other options. Next month we will talk about

the importance of this upgrade for your website.
