From My Saddle
New Life

February 1, 2007

Along with new beginnings in the New Year, it’s exciting to see the promises of new life. I don’t know of anything more heartwarming than the tender caress of a mother as she gently nudges, licks and encourages her new foal to get up and try life. In this issue we explore the basics of foal imprinting.

We will also find the latest health concerns about colic and your horse’s lifestyle. There are tips on avoiding some of the difficulties domestication has raised for our equine partners. See this month’s Doctor’s Corner.

We are incredibly privileged to have great writers contributing on a regular basis. I know that I echo the thoughts of many of you as I extend a heartfelt thanks to our writers for bringing us such great information on developing our relationship with our horses. There’s no doubt – we’re in the age of information overload and there is a plethora of learning venues and opportunities. We are honored that you have selected the Northwest Horse Source as one of your resources for learning.

We would love to hear from you. Send us photos of you and your horse, comments about the articles or a great new product. Share your ideas with other readers in the NWHS community. Send comments to Editor, NWHS, PO Box 717, Blaine, WA 98231 or email editor@nwhorsesource.com.

We look forward to the expos and trade shows for an opportunity to meet you personally. Watch for us at the upcoming Mane Event Expo February 9-11 at the Clark County Event Center in Ridgefield, Washington. You’ll be introduced to trainers who have not only mastered the art of training horses, but of teaching people how to work and enjoy their horses.

There are names of many gifted people that never appear on the masthead of this magazine who have contributed a great deal to its success. I’ve always been blessed with great friends and a support system that keeps me going and accountable. That’s what keeps me on target in the business and helps me to be a more successful rider, horse owner and friend. I can only hope that each of you has such an encouraging group of people surrounding you and propelling you forward. It’s easy for me to get sidetracked by life and think I don’t have time to ride. Thankfully there are those in my support network who nudge me and remind me to take the time. It changes my whole perspective when I’ve had my horse fix for the day.

I can’t imagine my world without horses … remember to ride!
