Dear Shaboom and Clyde, My mare sometimes squeals at other horses while I am riding her. Why does she do that? Moe, Burns, OR.
Moe, Your mare may be exhibiting signs of being in season. If she holds her tail out and seems to be easily excited when around male horses this could be the cause of her squealing. It could also be that she is trying to gain dominance over other horses by intimidating them. This behavior should not be allowed when she is under saddle as it could lead to someone getting hurt. You may want to talk with a reliable trainer to learn how to curb this behavior.
Famous Mares in History
Miss Sugar Charge was the National Champion Rangerbred Halter mare in 1975. Handle With Care, The worlds fastest Standardbred filly of all time, won 47 of her 68 starts, with earnings of $615,366 through her 3rd season of harness racing in 1975. Handle With Care is the 3rd leading distaff 2-minute star of all time, and her record of 1:52.2, 1:54.4 ranks with only 2 other horses who have managed to pace faster than 1:55 in a race. Natalma, the 1957 Thoroughbred mare, was the Dam of Champion racehorse and Sire Northern Dancer, who won 14 of 18 starts in 2 years earning $580,647. Northern Dancer won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes and went on to be a great sire. Serena’s Song, was the Champion three-year-old filly of 1995, winner over colts in top company, and the leading-earning female with $3,283,388. Poco Lena, 1949 AQHA mare, made a huge splash in the arena as a top notch cutting horse. She produced only 2 foals in her lifetime, both by the great stallion Doc Bar. Dry Doc and Doc O’ Lena were both great cutting horses and leading sires, most cutting horses today have one or both of these stallions in their pedigree. Chicado V, 1950 AQHA mare, was the 1952 Co-Racing World Champion 2-year-old filly. She was also an outstanding brood-mare, 7 of her 9 offspring earning Registers of Merit in Racing. Some of her more well known sons were sired by the Thoroughbred stallion Three Bars; the 1955 stallion, Triple Chick, the 1959 stallion, Three Chicks, and the 1960 stallion, The Ole Man. Barbra B, 1943 Bay AQHA mare, beat the immortal Shue Fly in 1944 at the New Mexico State Fair. Beat in the same race of 440 yards were Squaw H and Piggin String. During the race Queenie threw a shoe and didn’t even slow down, setting a track record of 21.4 seconds. The irony is that Queenie also had a clubfoot resulting from an injury as a foal but it never slowed her down on the track. She went on to be a great brood mare. Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988) are the only three fillies to win the Kentucky Derby. Both Regret and Winning Colors are the only two fillies to have run in all three Triple Crown races. Flicka (real name Wahama) was played by a 900 lb. chestnut Arabian mare in the TV series 'My Friend Flicka" and was trained by Les Hilton. Wahama's stunt double was a Quarterhorse gelding named Goldie
