![]() From My Saddle Celebrate Freedom! Happy 4th of July! This year, celebration of Independence Day should take on new meaning as we welcome soldiers returning home from Iraq. A big THANK YOU goes to all those soldiers who fought to preserve the freedom of our nation and to aid those who were powerless to help themselves. Our freedom depends on those willing to sacrifice their very lives to preserve it. My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones in this war. The sting of losing a loved one lasts forever, but hopefully you are able to take comfort in the cause for which they gave their lives! Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Events of the past month have taught me a tremendous amount about the value of caring people and caring professionals. Unexpectedly my brother, Dan landed in the hospital for open heart surgery. Thankfully, he came through the surgery and is doing well. The prayers and words of encouragement from caring friends have been greatly appreciated. In addition, my mare Dawn partially severed a tendon just below her hock joint. Lots of time, medication, bandaging and complete stall rest are resulting in the necessary healing. Aside from missing NWRA shows for the season and lots of great trail riding, this inconvenience has helped me to appreciate the committed professionals that give so generously of time and expertise to bring healing and support during such times. A special thank you to the staff at Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, particularly Dr. Sauter and Dr. Plotts who have worked diligently to keep in constant communication with me as the mare is on the mend. In this issue we focus on the "Working Horse". Horses are not only a vital part of our economy, but help to retain a piece of history for us. I've been to several great events during the month of May that really made me realize how valuable the horse is to our nation. I had the opportunity to observe the Budweiser Clydesdales, working to advertise a company, but beyond that, to bring people in touch with the transportation and work of horses that helped to build our nation. The Bureau of Land Management held a "Wild Horse Adoption" the last week of May right in Lynden, Washington. This is a governmental agency that is involved in protecting wild free-roaming horses and burros from capture, branding, harassment or death, while at the same time facilitating the removal and disposal of excess wild free-roaming horses and burros which pose a threat to themselves and their habitat. Adoptions are conducted around the nation. These descendants of horses that helped to settle the West are redirected into mainstreams occupations consistent with our society today. Throughout the pages of this issue you will meet the Ranch Horse, the Blue Collar Equine and celebrate the only living Supreme Champion stallion, a reminder of the versatility and work of the American Quarter Horse. Keep watching the pages of each issue as we make changes to better address the needs of our readers and advertisers. Summer brings busy times for all of us. However, make sure to take time to enjoy the ride! Copyright © 2009 The NW Horse Source |
