Last month, we addressed the topics of Artificial insemination (AI) and choosing the right stallion for your mare. This month we will expand on that topic and go into more depth about what makes a good breeding stallion.
So, what makes a good breeding stallion?
Here are some things to look for.
Pedigree: He should have a strong pedigree. Research his pedigree; see what both his ancestors and their offspring have achieved and what kinds of offspring they've produced. The pedigree of a good breeding stallion should include both accomplished ancestors and foals that have gone on to be successful in their career.
Conformation: A breeding stallion needs to look the part by being as close to the ideal conformation for his breed as possible. Most breeds have a breed standard, which are guidelines for the conformational traits that breed should have.
Disposition: A good breeding stallion should be both mentally solid and trainable. Now is when the old saying of "pretty is as pretty does" applies: if you have a great stallion with a good pedigree and correct conformation, yet he can't be trained, what are you left with?
Success: A good breeding stallion shows success in something fairly easy to document, such as having a show record, a racing record, or even just being a great horse with children.
Offspring: Finally, a good breeding stallion passes these traits to his get. The ultimate breeding stallion can "out- produce" himself, that is, create better horses than he is himself. The ultimate is a National Champion stallion that produces National Champion offspring.
