One of the pitfalls we can slip into from time to time is creating an overly complex web site. Complex design can be distracting. Complex navigation can be discouraging. And complex features can go unused.
A simple clean design, straightforward navigation, and easy-to-use features do a better job of keeping a user’s attention. And that is the ultimate goal when you want to leverage the impact of your web site.
Avoiding a ‘complex’ site does not mean avoiding powerful features. When you evaluate your web site, simple features – such as a ‘search’ function or an email subscription form – can be extremely powerful. But if the ‘search’ feature is too complicated it will go unused. The key is to identify the essential features and to make them as simple as possible to use.
The area of navigation is often a confusing issue for users. An intuitive system of moving through your site enables people to efficiently move through your site. For example, keep the main navigation (top level) easily accessible at all times. Typically on the left side or top of the page – but keep it in the same place on every page. There are also services that will check your site for “dead” links. Links that go to the dreaded “File Not Found” page are quite disheartening.
A simple site design and structure is easier to maintain, more stable, and more compatible with various types of browsers. And at the end of the day a better experience for your users.
