From My Saddle - November

Contentment…

Human beings seem to have the insatiable thirst to strive for more, somehow equating the acquisition of things, status or power with happiness. The quest gives rise to the notion that there's gotta be something more. I've learned that no matter how much I have financially, physically or emotionally, it's never enough. The more I get, the more I want, or the more I think I deserve. Why is this a struggle?

This past weekend I was challenged to think of satisfaction and contentment in new ways. Satisfaction and contentment are often considered synonyms. They are not the same. Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, it's the realization of how much you already have. So I started to take a look. Is it really that bad? Do I really need more? I was challenged to shift my focus and consider the good things, good friends and family I already have. It is amazing how that lead me to think about how rich and blessed I truly am. I began to realize that quality time and energy spent with someone else is never a waste of time. Going out and practicing retail therapy just doesn't seem to ultimately fill that yearning for more. Besides, you buy another 'thing' you just have to take care of it and pay for it when the credit card bill comes through! The momentary gratification just doesn't seem to stick around.

I would like to encourage you to take inventory. Don't waste your energy comparing yourself and what you have with what someone else has. What do you actually have? What really matters to you? I'm not suggesting that you settle for less, just take the time to evaluate if you were able to have what you currently desire, would it really make you happy?

I am so thankful for this recent challenge that has allowed me to refocus. I must say I'm a very fortunate person. I have two wonderful horses, nice rigs (not new, but very functional), a great family, wonderful husband, good friends and I work in a field I love. I own a horse magazine! I'm learning and growing and am surrounded by a great staff. Should I be satisfied? Never. Should I be content? Absolutely.

We are encouraged here at the Northwest Horse Source with the interaction and response we are getting from our readers. Many times an article presents a limited perspective on a particular issue for a number of reasons ranging from space allowed to the author's particular slant. We are all enriched by the questions and comments of readers. It challenges each of us to look in new directions, consider a different perspective and evaluate our own stance personally. We value your commitment to a learning community that is expressed by each of your comments. We welcome and encourage your comments and interaction.

Have a great fall and remember to enjoy the ride!
