Human-Equine Alliances for Learning – HEAL

Far from the bustle of the show ring, some horses are excelling at a far more delicate task— assisting therapists and educators as they help people recover from a variety of mental health disorders or traumas.  Human Equine Alliances for Learning (HEAL), based in Chehalis Washington, is non-profit organization that offers therapy and educational programs for youth and adult clients.  HEAL is sponsoring fall workshops in Olympia (October 10-11) and Seattle (Dec 5-7), for those who would like to learn more about the therapeutic use of the horse/human bond.

Founder Leigh Shambo, MSW, is a clinical therapist and lifelong horseperson whose first career was dressage training.  She says, “It is just amazing how the horses teach people about their ‘inner reality’.   They have a sophisticated ability to sense human emotions, and then respond with honesty, compassion and generosity.

HEAL offers Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Experiential Learning (EEL). Both approaches emphasize emotional self-awareness, energetic (mind-body) congruity, clarity in communication, and focused intention.  The goal is to manifest constructive change outside the riding arena.

The therapy, or EAP, consists of an ongoing therapeutic relationship with clearly established treatment goals to address specific mental health symptoms or problematic behaviors. Educational activities, or EEL, usually take place in a workshop format, or in private or small group sessions held at HEAL’s home locations or other locations throughout the United States and Canada.  Participants learn skills for creating healthy relationships, satisfying careers, and a more vibrant and authentic sense of self.

For a complete listing of HEAL sponsored workshops and services call (360) 266-0778 or  email  heal@localaccess.com.

Monty Roberts’ New Release, From My Hands to Yours

Monty Roberts' long-awaited definitive guide to violence-free horse training, From My Hands To Yours, introduces the nonverbal language of the horse, "Equus," that Roberts has been using throughout his life to effectively communicate with horses.  In fact, this book actually contains the complete Dictionary of Equus, in which Roberts illustrates and explains dozens of gestures made by both horses and people, facilitating a true interspecies dialogue.  The book also includes step-by-step explanations of his Join-Up® method, and even includes hundreds of helpful illustrations and photographs that depict the horse willingly entering into a partnership with a human.

Throughout the book, Monty recommends procedures not only for Join-Up® with a "raw" horse but also clearly sets forth a program for remedial horses that display undesirable behaviors including: bucking, biting, kicking, rearing, and much more.  Whether the reader's interest is in reining, show jumping, barrel racing, dressage, cutting, polo racing, or leisure riding, From My Hands To Yours is designed to help the reader communicate with his or her horse in a partnership that will last a lifetime.

New Equimax™ (ivermectin/praziquantel) Kills Tapeworms and All Major Equine Parasites in a Single Dose

New science has made horse owners and veterinarians increasingly aware of the danger of equine tapeworms. Now, Equimax™ offers protection from tapeworms (Anoplocephala perfoliata) and all major equine parasites in a single dose. Equimax is the world's leading ivermectin/praziquantel equine dewormer, proven safe and effective in over 25 countries with more than two and a half million doses administered. It can be confidently given to horses four weeks of age and older.

The combined damage caused by tapeworms in this area can have devastating results. Tapeworms are a leading cause of colic in horses. In a 1998 study published by Proudman, French and Trees, the researchers found that 22% of spasmodic (gas) colics were associated with tapeworms, along with 81% of ileal impactions (2). Ileocecal intussusception--a potentially fatal colic condition--is almost always caused by tapeworm infection (3).

Pfizer Inc discovers, develops, manufactures and markets leading prescription medicines, for humans and animals, and many of the world's best known consumer products.
