Crafting the Perfect Title Tag

A well-written website is one of the keys to a successful online presence. However, in today’s quick-paced Internet culture, the importance of written copy is often devalued. Many people believe Web users simply don’t spend very much time reading on the web. But is that really true?

Your website’s first impression is based on its written content. Well-written, engaging content draws a potential customer into your site. Once you have a user’s attention you need to strike the perfect balance between quality and quantity. One of the main reasons people visit your website is for education. You can afford to have lots of written content if it is compelling but too much poorly written content distracts potential customers faster than they can type in your competitor’s web address.

Your site’s written content starts with the Title Tag. This tag is written in the HTML and is displayed at the top of the browser window, in search engine results, and in the browser’s Favorites or Bookmarks. The Title Tag is also essential for optimizing search engines.

A couple of thoughts as you are crafting the perfect Title Tag:

- The Title Tag identifies what your website is about to your users and search engines, so make it descriptive.

-Include important keywords for your website. If your site is about horses, your Title Tag needs to include the word “horse.”

- Avoid making an overt “sales pitch” in the Title Tag – it can be distracting to your core message.

- Include geographical information about your business.

- Limit the length of your Title Tag. The first 70 characters are the most important as they are visible in the browser title bar.

- Use unique Title Tags for each page. This allows you to highlight the core purpose of each page.

The Title Tag announces what makes your business unique and is your first impression to potential customers. Take the time to make it compelling and effective. At very least, make sure it doesn’t just say “Home Page.” Next month we will examine other content areas of your website that may need some tweaking.
