Happy Fourth of July! Once again, we pause to celebrate the beginnings of our great nation. Midst picnics, fireworks and time for family, take time to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy on a daily basis in the United States. The theme this month is the working horse. We celebrate the horse that earns a living in this issue.
This year we feature the Thoroughbred racehorse. This is one horse that still drives significant money into our economy – the total annual investment of the Washington Thoroughbred industry is estimated at over $280 million.* Many of these horses more than earn their keep! This past week I had the privilege of visiting with Ralph Vacca, manager of the Washington Thoroughbred Association. I explored the backstretch of Emerald Downs in the early morning and found trainers, riders and handlers working diligently to feed, groom, exercise and clean these magnificent horses. The backstretch is truly an energizing place for those who are passionate about the world of racing. Read the feature story about the world of horse racing on page ____. Anyone can be involved at some level, either through ownership, betting on your favorite horse or working as a support person in the industry.
There are many exciting events on the slate for this summer. I’m looking forward to camping with my horses and visiting Vashon Island for the AQHA ride sponsored by The Vashon Maury Island Horse Association, August 27. I will also attend AQHA’s newest event, the “Regional Experience” in Redmond, Oregon, August 18-21. This event is designed for people who wish to learn more about the American Quarter Horse, get an introduction to the world of showing, try out an American Quarter Horse, experience an equine trade show, clinics and trail ride all in a couple of days! See ad on page ____.
Review “What’s Happening” in July on page ____. We’ve got an action packed events calendar with things to do all over the Northwest. For an extended calendar visit www.nwhorsesource.com and go to “Events.”
I’d like to thank a very special person in my world. As a small business owner, I struggle with different aspects of managing a business. My advisor, Megan Watt, at the Western Washington University Small Business Development Center, has truly made a difference in my business. I meet with her monthly to review goals and problem areas that need attention. This program is possible through the SBA (Small Business Administration). It always helps to have an outside perspective.
In celebration of our country’s birthday, I’d like to thank all the people who serve in our military. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you and may God Bless America!
Have a great summer and remember to ride!
