Thoughts on Leadership

Thoughts on Leadership

I’m constantly challenged to learn more about leadership. Part of it is being willing to do the things that you expect others to do. It is willingly serving. It certainly isn’t telling others what to do and micromanaging until the job is done. I believe that when we are forced, rather than asked to do things, we feel resentment and disillusionment.

Another part of leadership is influence. It is inspiring others to become part of a team with members moving willingly in the same direction. It’s a bit like training a horse. You’re never going to win a battle of wills between a 1200 pound horse. One must learn to understand how the horse thinks and feels. It’s the same with leadership. The leader must take the time to understand each team member and help them discover how they fit into both the creation and implementation of the vision. I have been privy to first-hand experience with such lessons this past year. I’m learning about selecting the right person for the job, clarifying expectations up front and allowing each person to be part of the decisions and outcomes.

I’m proud of the team we have put together at the NWHS. We have a group of individuals that are forgiving of a leader who is new to the task. Open communication has become the rule. Without the people behind this magazine it just wouldn’t happen. We’re committed to serving the needs of the equine community with the best publication possible. If we can help you gain a better understanding of their equine friends, or help you find that special horse, or find the right product, we’re a success. Let us know how we are doing. We truly value your comments and insights.

This month we focus on the English Disciplines and getting ready for the show season. Throughout the pages of this issue you will be invited to participate in an ageless tradition and a great recreational sport with Fraser Valley Hunt. An Eastern Oregon cowgirl will explain the value of Dressage for Western Disciplines, and you will learn about the latest in English show clothing.

We have had great response to our newly designed Equine Marketplace! You had some great ideas that have helped us design a shopping venue that is convenient to the reader and cost-effective for the advertiser. We are working on designing a similar system online at www.nwhorsesource.com. Keep checking! It will be up and running by mid-March.

Come see us at the NW Horse Fair and Expo in Albany, OR – March 19-21. Stop in and enter a chance to win online advertising for one year!

Have a great spring and keep riding!
