Jamie Means was born in Alaska and spent most of his life in Humboldt County, California. He now lives on a ranch, K & M Quarter Horses, in Red Bluff, CA, where he breeds and trains Quarter Horses. Jamie re-creates the cowboy life with original drawings of rodeo and the working cowboy.
Having been raised on the back of a horse is evident in his work. Without any formal art training, Means captures the life and times of the working cowboy. His works display a mastery of detail with the unique ability to deliver the emotions of horse and rider.
Prior to 2002, Jaime had never displayed his work. Bedridden and awaiting back surgery for a work related injury, he spent his time rekindling the love of drawing and began entering works in California county fairs during the summer of 2003. He won “Honorable Mention” at the San Diego County Fair, “Peoples Choice” at the Humboldt County Fair, and “Best of Show” at the Redwood Acres Fair. Means is emerging as one of the bright new talents on the western art scene. He was recently invited to show his graphite drawings at the prestigious 36th Annual C.M. Russell Museum’s Art Auction to be held in Great Falls, Montana. It’s the largest and most successful western art auction of its kind. Out of hundreds of submittals, only four new artists were selected by a juried panel to enter their works in this event.
Jamie is incredibly skilled at the development of sunlight and shadows, using only a graphite pencil, the most basic, but difficult of mediums. Without the element of color, an artist is forced to rely on his skillful use of design, composition and lighting to tell his story. "My inspiration comes easy because I love this life, a vanishing way of life," says Means.
His work has won numerous awards and can be found in private collections throughout the United States.
