Equine Artist - Ami Shishani

October 2005

Printer friendly page
Ami Shishani was born and raised in Malmo, Sweden by Finnish immigrant parents. As soon as she was old enough to hold a pencil she remembers starting to draw and paint animals, especially horses.
“I loved the grace and beauty they represented. As a child I always wanted a horse of my own, and that horse was in my dreams as long as I can remember. When I was six I saw a shooting star and right away wished that I would get my very own horse.” Ami was in her twenties before her wish came true.

Entirely self-taught, Ami’s career as a professional artist began when she opened a studio in her home town, Malmo. “I displayed my artwork in the windows, and customers quickly poured in. What really made me happy was to see the faces of the people when they picked up their paintings.”

Ami moved to the United States in 1988, and in 2000 started her own website (www.amiart.com) to promote her artwork. She has also had a few art shows in California. “A show held in Lafayette, CA showed my ink drawing In Control, a life-size Arabian stallion. People were amazed by it. It’s a huge drawing and is hanging right in my living room. I think that Arabian will be on my wall forever. My artwork takes me to another world. I can smell the horses’ hair while I am painting, and feel his veins while I create them on the canvas.”

Ami is still amazed by the fantastic responses she gets from people around the world. “I am fortunate to have a career that I am so passionate about and grateful that my talents bring such joy to other people.”

Ami Shishani is based north of San Francisco. All her artwork, which is offered in a variety of media, is available through her website: www.amiart.com
