Elin Pendleton’s life has been a series of distinct conflicts. She has always loved horses—“the epitome of living grace and beauty on this earth.” In every oil or acrylic painting she tries to capture the horse’s beauty and the relationship between horses and humans. Her conflict comes from being adroit in areas that take her away from, but also compliment her art. She raises and trains her riding horses, uses pack goats for day hikes and on-location painting, and enjoys gardening. The conflict of time for these other interests has led her to create works of art in relatively condensed periods of time.
She worked for 18 years as a teacher in an entirely different field while developing the credentials for gallery representation and a solid artist’s reputation. The decision to leave teaching wasn’t easy for Elin, however, and she still teaches workshops and produces painting instruction videos. In addition she has published “Painting Horses in Acrylics” with Walter Foster Publishing.
Although she paints other subjects, horses make up the majority of her work. She researches her subjects for accuracy of time, place and activity. Elin works from her own reference material, and knows that her collectors are aware of the story that she is trying to paint. Her love of equine subjects has led to a study of equine anatomy that is now evident in her work.
Elin is a full member of the American Academy of Equine Art, an organization that recognizes the best painters and sculptors of horses in the United States. Her other professional memberships include the Women Artists of the West, Inc., Oil Painters of America and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.
Elin’s websites display over 300 of her paintings, of all subjects, including horses. Her current work is available on the “New Work” page at www.elinart.com.
